Mansion House

The Mansion built by Peter Smith, founder of Peterboro, in 1804. Lifelong home of abolitionist Gerrit Smith, who opened his home to people of all colors and social status.

A meeting place for many of the 19th century's greatest reformers, and a safe house for fugitives from slavery.

The mansion was destroyed by fire on March 2, 1936

The Gerrit Smith Estate is a designated National Historic Landmark, and a National Network to Freedom UGRR site.
